Zamek Cesarski [Imperial Castle]

The construction of this impressive building was started in 1905 and ended already 5 years later. The castle, being a central point of a so-called imperial district, was erected for the last German Emperor and King of Prussia William II who participated actively in planning his seat’s appearance. The Neo-Romanesque style structure, built on the plan of an irregular polygon, was designed by Franz Schwechten.
At present, the building pulses with artistic life. The largest Poznań cultural institution – Centrum Kultury Zamek [Castle Cultural Centre] is housed there. Every year it organises 2500 events in all artistic fields (including famous and appreciated literary, film and music festivals), it holds a cinema, theatre and bookstore. It is just a 7-minute walk from the underground car park under Wolności Square to admire this unique marriage of the Prussian, monumental building and Polish (but not only!) culture.
