Stary Rynek [Old Market]

This is the third largest old town square in Poland. As much as 60% of old structures were destroyed during the fighting in 1945. However, already many of them were reconstructed in the 1950s. Few buildings that survived the war can be still admired. The town hall is, of course, the most impressive one of them – built in the Middle Ages, reconstructed in the 16th century according to the design of the Italian architect Giovanni Batista di Quadro. It is also worth drawing attention to Apteka pod Białym Orłem [Pharmacy under the White Eagle] with a baroque facade from the 18th century and eclectic Apteka pod Złotym Lwem [Pharmacy under the Gold Lion] from the beginning of the 20th century.
On the Old Market there are numerous restaurants with open air areas as well as museums and galleries: Muzeum Historii Miasta Poznania [Museum of the History of Poznań], Wielkopolskie Muzeum Wojskowe [Military Museum of Wielkopolska] or Galera Miejska Arsenał [Municipal Gallery Arsenal]. It is worth leaving a car in the underground car park under Wolności Square because as early as at the end of 1954 it was decided to eliminate motor-vehicle traffic there.
