Plac Wolności [Freedom Square]

The square carried the name of two rulers – first, the name of William (in memory of Frederick William II), then, the name of Napoleon, to celebrate by its name Polish aspirations to regain freedom at the end. Poznań residents determine it just as Plajta. This perfectly represents the nature of Wolności Square – a place where the great history (here the Wielkopolska Uprising has begun) has always met with the vibrant social life. Rebuilt several times, inter alia, during the construction of the underground car park under it, the present shape was taken in 2012. Then, near the Hygeia fountain, the Freedom fountain was erected, consisting of two 10-metre wings on which water flows down.
Wolności Square has been and today it is a centre of many events – both anniversary celebrations and demonstration as well as artistic and commercial events.
