This is one of the oldest, largest and most important museums in Poland. The Museum has existed since 1857 and as the National Museum – since 1950. Its rich collections include works of almost all historical periods. Their material part contains a collection of the Polish art. We can find unique coffin portraits there (unknown outside the circle of influence of Sarmatian culture), a range of works, the most valuable in Poland, by Jacek Malczewski, as well as a rich mosaic of contemporary works – from Tadeusz Kantor, through Jerzy Nowosielski to Alina Szapocznikow.
The European collections are equally interesting: Italian Renaissance paintings, Spanish art from the 17th century or a wide choice of works of German artists. However, the painting of the French impressionist Claude Monet, entitled “Beach in Pourville”, the only one in Poland, is the most interesting museum piece. The painting was stolen 2001 and it took 10 years to catch a thief and get back the priceless work.
